Multidimensional Inequality in Viet Nam

The webinar “Multidimensional Inequality in Viet Nam” is part of the AFD’s Research Department webinar series launched to offer a platform for discussion on research and public policy issues. The research report that will be presented is part of The Research Facility on Inequalities, a partnership between the European Commission (DevCo) and the AFD which, after 3 years of research, is finding significant results.

Join us for the second webinar in this series on Tuesday, December 15th at 11h CEST, dedicated to the project “Multidimensional Inequalities Study in Viet Nam”, jointly led by Oxfam Intermón and the Mekong Development Research Institute (MDRI).

Vu Thi Quynh Hoa, Head of Campaign & Advocacy at Oxfam Vietnam and Dr. Phung Duc Tung, Director of the Mekong Development Research Institute will be invited to present the report.

Vietnam has achieved great economic development over the past 30 years. However, there is growing concern over increasing inequalities in other aspects of life for certain population subgroups. This study carried out by the Mekong Development Research Institute and Oxfam is a first attempt to examine multidimensional inequality in key inequality domains: life and health, education and learning, and participation, influence and voice. The study is the first Asian pilot of the Multidimensional Inequality Framework, developed by the CASE/LSE, SOAS/UoL and Oxfam, and it follows a mixed-methods approach, with quantitative and qualitative methods carried out in sequence. The research findings point at large gaps between subpopulation groups across spatial, socio-economic, and ethnic axes of inequalities in their capability to enjoy the right to a proper, quality education, to experience a life free of illness and access to quality healthcare facilities, and have an influence and voice on public matters.
