Once upon a time, architects relied heavily on print journals and books as the primary media for disseminating their work and apprehending new ideas. The advent of the digital, however, has transformed the field. While the internet offers a dynamic platform where architects can showcase their work, print publication remains a different, powerful, and often overlooked way to express architectural ideas. How does showcasing a project in a book differ from uploading photos online, and what benefits does it offer? What steps can architects take to see their work in a book/print publication?
As the 12th Annual A+Awards season draws to a close — with the fast-approaching Extended Entry Deadline on February 23rd — we invite the two brilliant creative minds behind the design studio Cantina to delve into these questions and more. As the designers of Architizer’s annual "The World’s Best Architecture" compendium and numerous other thoughtfully designed books, they’ll share their expertise on how to tell compelling stories through print.

Ana Rita Teodoro is the creative director and co-founder of Cantina, a design studio with offices in London, UK, and Algarve, Portugal. The studio takes an editorial approach to its work, be it branding, websites or print, with the focus being on telling compelling stories. Before co-founding Cantina, Ana received her BA and MA in Communication Design at the University of Lisbon, before working as a designer at Black Dog Publishing and Artifice. She subsequently worked at Pavilion Books before moving to the design agency Within International, where she worked as their Head of Brand.
James Brown is the strategic director and co-founder of Cantina, a design studio with offices in London, UK, and Algarve, Portugal. The studio takes an editorial approach to its work, be it branding, websites or print, with the focus being on telling compelling stories. James has a background in art and design, and received a BA in Photographic Arts before working as an editor and writer. He has worked at a number of design studios in London including Pentagram and Bibliothèque, on branding projects for clients such as Rolls-Royce, Laurence King and Sundance Film Festival.
