ASPI Presents: ANZUS at 70 - The past, present and future of the alliance

About this event

ASPI and the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia are delighted to invite you to launch a new ASPI and AmCham co-publication ‘ANZUS at 70: the past, present and future of the alliance’.

On 1 September 1951, the ANZUS Treaty was signed in San Francisco. Seventy years on, the Treaty remains a central pillar of Australian defence and security policy and a key part of the United States’ ‘hub and spokes’ alliance system globally.

The alliance continues to adapt to address new challenges, support new opportunities for cooperation and promote wider security interests in the region.

This publication features 46 chapters by expert contributors including former political leaders, prominent historians, scientists, academic practitioners and journalists. It encompasses the historical  foundations of ANZUS, its evolution in the post-war world, as well as contemporary and emerging challenges to the alliance from different perspectives including geo-political trends in the Asia-Pacific region. The authors also look beyond formal defence and security relations and examine bilateral co-operation in business, economics, science and technology.

Join ASPI’s Peter Jennings for a discussion on the history and future of the alliance with contributing authors Dr Brendan Nelson, AO, Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia and ASPI Council Member; Michelle Grattan, The Conversation’s Chief Political Correspondent and Lisa Sharland, Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Stimson Center. April Palmerlee, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia, will deliver the Vote of Thanks.

Please note: This event is a hybrid event with the option to attend in person or online.
