ASPI Webinar: Reforming Australia's electronic surveillance laws

Australia’s national security laws are undergoing one of the most significant reforms in over four decades.

The recent Comprehensive Review of the Legal Framework of the National Intelligence Community concluded that the existing electronic surveillance legislative framework is no longer fit-for-purpose. Frequent amendments have struggled to keep pace with the rapid evolution of communications and technology and the evolving criminal and national security threats. As part of the response, the Australian Government committed to repeal and replace existing laws that govern electronic surveillance with one consolidated Act.

The panel will discuss the proposed changes; the impacts on policing and intelligence agencies' powers, and civil liberties (privacy in particular); and implications for industry.
