Professor Joerg Steier is a specialist in respiratory and sleep medicine. After studying at the University of Leipzig, he gained clinical and research experience across Europe, Asia and the United States, with specialist respiratory training at the Western German Lung Centre. He moved to London on a European Respiratory Society fellowship and completed a PhD at King’s College London on sleep-disordered breathing and respiratory muscle physiology. His work has generated influential publications and impact, including a medical product and a spinout company. He is Consultant at the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (ventilation and weaning), and works with the Sleep Disorders Centre. He holds the Chair in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at King’s College London, serves on the BTS Science & Research Committee, is immediate Past President of the British Sleep Society (BSS), and is Chair of the ERS Group for Clinical and Epidemiological Sleep Disorders.
