Prof. Dr. med. Gerald Zimmermann ist Chefarzt der Abteilung für Unfallchirurgie und Orthopädische Chirurgie, Facharzt für Allgemeinchirurgie und Direktor des Gelenkersatzzentrums. Er ist Facharzt für Allgemeinchirurgie (2000), Unfallchirurgie (2003), Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie (2007) und spezialisierte Unfallchirurgie (2007). Darüber hinaus ist er Facharzt für Notfallmedizin und Sportmedizin (2014).

Prof. Zimmermann hat ein besonderes Interesse an der regenerativen Muskel-Skelett-Therapie. Mit über 200 Vorträgen und Publikationen ist er international als Experte auf diesem Gebiet anerkannt. Er ist einer der ersten, der sich auf die klinische Anwendung von adulten Stammzellen und Wachstumsfaktoren konzentriert und ist Koordinator und Hauptprüfer mehrerer internationaler prospektiver, randomisierter Phase-III-Studien im Bereich Knorpel- und Knochenregeneration. Als Vorsitzender des Beirats der Karl Kärcher Stiftung für Regenerative Medizin fördert er zudem die Erforschung und Behandlung von Arthrose.

Das Theresienkrankenhaus und die St. Hedwig-Klinik verfügt über 580 Betten und behandelt jährlich rund 26.000 stationäre und über 40.000 ambulante Patienten mit insgesamt rund 14.000 Operationen.

Die Abteilung Unfallchirurgie, Orthopädie und Sporttraumatologie mit 110 Betten und rund 7.000 stationären Patienten pro Jahr mit 5.000 Operationen deckt das gesamte Spektrum der chirurgischen Versorgung aller orthopädischen Erkrankungen, traumatischen Verletzungen, von der Akutversorgung über den Gelenkersatz bis hin zu komplexen Rekonstruktionen ab, mit besonderem Fokus auf Sportmedizin.
