More information about the presenting surgeons

Dr Geertje Govaert is a trauma surgeon at the Academic Medical Centre Utrecht in The Netherlands. She trained as a general and trauma surgeon in Amsterdam and Maastricht and completed two fellowships in Sydney and Brisbane in Australia, and also the Secretary of the Dutch Trauma Society. Although she has a keen interest in polytrauma care with a special focus on pelvic fractures, her real passion lies in treating patients with fracture-related infections. Together with the members of the Fracture Related Infection Consensus Group she is highly motivated to provide the highest level of care for this patient group, in particular by continuously emphasizing the importance of a specialized multidisciplinary approach to this disease.

Prof. Dr. med. Gerald Zimmermann is the Head of the Trauma and orthopaedic surgery Department, Certified general Surgeon and Director of the joint replacement centre. He is a specialist in general surgery (2000), trauma surgery (2003), orthopaedics and trauma surgery (2007), and specialized trauma surgery (2007). In addition, he is qualified as emergency medicine and sports medicine physician (2014).

Prof. Zimmermann has a speciality interest in regenerative musculoskeletal therapy. He is internationally recognized as an expert in this field, with over 200 presentations and publications. He is one of the first who focused on the clinical application of adult stem cells and growth factors and is the coordinator and principal investigator of several international prospective, randomized, Phase III studies in the area of cartilage and bone regeneration. As chairman of the advisory board of the Karl Kärcher Foundation for Regenerative Medicine, he also promotes research into, and treatment of, osteoarthritis.

The Theresienkrankenhaus and St. Hedwig-Klinik has 580 beds and treats about 26,000 inpatients and more than 40,000 outpatients every year, with around 14,000 operations in total.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Traumatology Department has 110beds, and treats approximately 7,000 inpatients per year, with 5,000 operations, covering the entire range of surgical services required to treat all orthopaedic disorders, traumatic injuries, from acute care to joint replacement and complex reconstructions, with a particular focus on sports medicine.

Prof. Anand Pillai is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at University Hospitals South Manchester, Wythenshawe with a specialist interest in Foot & Ankle Surgery. He trained in Orthopaedic and Foot surgery in the West of Scotland and has undertaken further sub-specialist fellowships in Adelaide, South Australia and Oxford. Prof. Pillai has also visited and worked with surgeons from SportsMed SA, Mater Hospital Sydney and Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital in Perth. Furthermore, Prof. Pillai has completed a fellowship in Ilizarov techniques and limb deformity correction at the world-renowned Russian Ilizarov Scientific Centre in Kurgan, Siberia. He was initially appointed as Consultant to Nine wells University Hospital and Dundee Medical School in Scotland, before moving to the North West. Prof. Pillai is a member of the EFAS research council and a committee member of AOFAS.

Wythenshawe hospital, located in South Manchester, is renowned for accepting patient referrals from surrounding hospitals for the treatment of complex trauma, bone infection, revision cases, difficult foot and ankle problems, diabetic feet and blast injuries. The orthoplastics service has an excellent system and treatment algorithm for the management of complex lower limb reconstruction.

Dr Pablo Corona, is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the field of musculoskeletal infections and the reconstruction of massive bone defects. Since 2007, he has been dedicated to the treatment of patients with severe musculoskeletal infections and has authored more than 40 scientific publications in the field of osteoarticular infection. Dr Corona is an active member of several national and international societies dedicated to the study of this speciality.

The University Hospital Vall D’ Hebron Complex in Barcelona is a public reference hospital with a specific transplant, pediatric, trauma, recon, septic, plastic, and burn units and has a capacity of 1150 beds. The hospital carried out more than 35.000 surgeries and 319 transplants in 2019. The Septic and Reconstructive surgery unit is a Spanish reference centre (CSUR) for complex Osteoarticular infections, including prosthesis infection, osteomyelitis, fracture-related infection, massive bone defect treatment, and complex reconstruction techniques. The department has a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal pathologies, in close collaboration with the Radiology, Neurophysiology, Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery Departments.
