Mr Ben Yates and Mr Matthew Cichero from Great Western Hospital, Swindon will present on “Using local antibiotic delivery systems in the management of osteomyelitis foot infections: the Great Western Hospital experience for the last 15 years”
The diabetic multidisciplinary team in Great Western Hospital in Swindon is led by the Endocrinology and Podiatric Surgery Department and has a catchment area of 400,000 patients.
The multidisciplinary team comprises diabetologists, podiatric surgeons, orthotists, vascular surgeons, diabetic nurses, microbiology, antibiotic pharmacists, diabetes nurses and vascular nurses. The teams sees 50-80 inpatients a year and over 4,000 outpatients a year, of which approx. 100 patients require acute diabetic foot surgical procedures such as debridement’s, reconstructive surgery and amputations. The team are a centre for the multi-centre SOLARIO trial.
Mr. Ben Yates is a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon and Head of the Podiatry Surgery Service and MDT, which he set up in 2005. He has a specialist interest in reconstructive surgery and limb salvage, and has lectured on both subjects at both national and international conferences. He is the principal editor of the textbook Assessment of the Lower Limb (Elsevier, 2009), and sits on the advisory panel for several journal publications. He is also heavily involved in teaching, and is the chair of the regional deanery for podiatric surgery.
Mr. Matthew Cichero is a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon, and a fellow of podiatric surgery in Australia and the UK. He joined the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust team in 2010, where his primary role was to co-ordinate acute diabetic foot admissions and surgery. Mr. Cichero has a specialist interest in elective reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, prophylactic surgical management of the diabetic foot, and emergent limb preservation surgery. Mr Cichero has presented both at national and international conferences, authored a number of peer reviewed international articles, and is Councilor for the College of Podiatry UK. He is a principle investigator for the Oxford SOLARIO osteomyelitis local antibiotic trial.
Mr Yates and Mr Cichero started to use CERAMENT in 2016, they have treated over 200 cases using CERAMENT G and CERAMENT V.
