Building an Opportunity Agenda for America's Cities

The pandemic is laying bare the fundamental inequalities of the U.S. economy, including a lack of economic mobility that has left millions of Americans in financial precarity—and fractured the promise of the land of opportunity. Although there is a growing recognition of the need to tackle these inequalities and opportunity gaps, there is still limited clarity about the policies that would be most effective. This lunchtime conversation explored concrete steps that mayors should take to build a more inclusive economy and discuss municipal initiatives/programs that have already had some success in expanding economic opportunity and which could be replicated elsewhere. And with the possibility that the November 3rd election will bring changes to the White House and Congress, the conversation examined what leaders in Washington should do in 2021 to create a bold new opportunity agenda.
