The State of Craft - Episode 11, Cannabis Insurance Special featuring Scott Wilkins and Linda Dohmeier

About this event

The State of Craft is a bi-weekly live conversation discussing the state of the legal craft cannabis industry presented by CertiCraft

In a startup industry full of uncertainties, one of the most difficult-to-navigate aspects of a cannabis business is finding affordable insurance solutions that meet your needs.

While many of the traditional providers are slowly entering the cannabis industry, it can be hard to find brokers who understand the needs of producers and processors, or have the experience to help point you in the right direction. That's why we are especially happy to be joined by the husband/wife team of Linda Dohmeier of Maxxam Insurance and Scott Wilkins of Nomis Holding Ltd.

This powerhouse duo are responsible for acquiring insurance coverage for many of the early stage Medical Cannabis growers, and their work has helped legitimize and protect the growing cannabis industry. With a constantly changing landscape, many hidden pitfalls to avoid, and insurance requirements in the millions, CertiCraft is excited to get the inside scoop on how to get the best insurance for your cannabis business.

For Episode 11, CertiCraft is proud to be joined by:

Scott Wilkins, Business Development Director for Nomis Holding Ltd.

Formerly a licensed commercial insurance broker for 16 years, Scott is an expert on hard-to-place insurance. So, when the opportunity arose to place a policy for a licensed medical cannabis facility, he felt it was a natural fit. Despite major hurdles, he was successful and founded the Medical Marijuana Insurance Program (MMIP). Under this program, Scott was responsible for placing the first insurance policy for a medical cannabis production facility in early 2010. Since that day, coverage has been placed for over 1000 medical patients licensed by Health Canada.

Scott was also an instrumental eye witness in the watershed Allard v. Canada case, attesting to the fact that medical cannabis can be produced safely.

When legalization brought cannabis production licenses to the market, Scott worked with dozens of Licensed Producers and other cannabis related businesses to create unique insurance solutions. In 2019, he left insurance behind and brought his expertise to Nomis Holding Ltd as the Business Development Director.

Mr. Wilkins is also a cannabis patient and passionately grows his own medicine. After an unfortunate car accident and subsequent C6-C7 spinal cord fusion (including 90 days in a halo), cannabis has allowed Scott to get off pain killers and the dreaded Gabapentin.

Linda Dohmeier, Insurance Specialist for Maxxam Insurance

Linda joined the insurance industry to assist her husband Scott after he founded the MMIP, helping to build the foundation for the insurance programs available today. After a sabbatical to focus on University studies (graduating from studies in Theatre), she has been providing expert insurance advice to numerous cannabis companies across Canada.

Recognizing the severe lack of broker experience and knowledge in the cannabis sector, Linda is committed to filling the service gap left by providers without the ability or the willingness to work with cannabis related companies. She is committed to serving our growing industry with sound information and excellent service.
