  • The Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC), a full-cycle BIM application that supports Industry 4.0 and Construction 2.0 strategies

Mr. Sammy LAI, Director, Gammon Construction Limited

Mr. Leo TSANG, BIM Manager, Gammon Construction Limited

Abstract: Located in Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, the $4.75 billion, 1.2 million-sq.ft facility in features superior design parameters in headroom, column-span and structural loading. The 9-storey building with 2-storey basement houses automation equipment, advanced robotics machine and seawater cooling system.

The full BIM project consists of large proportions of MiC/DfMA. Complementary technologies were used to validate items such as the programme, safety planning, submission production and 5D interim payment application.

A CDE was used for information exchange between Gammon and their eight specialist contractors, each of which had their own dedicated BIM team. Gammon’s in-house BIM team not only produced all the CSD/CDWD but also generated fabrication drawings for DfMA. With a detailed understanding of both the project information and technology, Gammon’s BIM team advocated digital ways of working and stipulated the use of mobile apps to improve productivity on the job site.

  • BIM Horizontal Harmonization for BIM/GIS Integration

Ms. Kaberlina HO, SE/10(N), NDO, CEDD

Ms. Can LEUNG, Technical Director - BIM, Innovative Solutions, AECOM

Abstract: CEDD has appointed AECOM for a study on “BIM horizontal harmonization for BIM/GIS integration” (the Study). The Study aims to formulate an aligned BIM guideline for the works departments (WDs) under the Development Bureau with the use of the BIM models under the First Phase Development of Kwu Tung North and Fanling North New Development Area, to facilitate the information exchange among the WDs and Lands Department. Under the Study, a conversion engine will be developed for BIM/GIS integration by converting the BIM models to shareable ones in open BIM and GIS formats, which are able to support the future production of Common Spatial Data Infrastructure portal and 3D digital map under the Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong. A BIM Data Repository will also be established to store the BIM and GIS models under the Study for effective and efficient information exchange among the WDs and Lands Department.

In this session, the speakers will share their experience in and progress of the Study, as well as the vision for the aligned BIM guideline and BIM/GIS integration architecture for wider adoption in future projects. As the Study supports the future production of Common Spatial Data Infrastructure and 3D digital maps, the industry would also benefit from the use of BIM, GIS and 3D data for more efficient design, construction, operation and asset management workflow.
