Bidirectional charging, also known as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), is gaining momentum globally as the e-mobility and energy sectors work to unlock new opportunities for grid flexibility and energy management. Countries such as the Netherlands and Australia are already deploying V2G-capable charging infrastructure, demonstrating the growing potential of electric vehicles to function as distributed energy resources.
Central to this transition is ISO 15118-20, the communication standard that enables bidirectional power transfer between electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. While this standard is a key enabler, widespread V2G deployment requires more than technology alone. Interoperability, conformance, certification, infrastructure readiness, and ecosystem collaboration all play critical roles in enabling EVs to operate as virtual power plants.
