The cost-of-living crisis and difficult economic conditions have resulted in more individuals than ever experiencing financial difficulties. Previously viewed as a hidden or taboo subject in many workplaces, a number of employees are now looking to their employer for support with financial issues. The sensitive nature of these matters, however, means many individuals are still not comfortable discussing these with their employer or accessing support through their workplace. About our panellists

Gail Irvine is head of business development and policy at the Living Wage Foundation. Gail joined the Living Wage Foundation in October 2022. She is responsible for driving forward new projects that maximise voluntary employer approaches to tackle in-work poverty and promote good work.

Previously, Gail was Living Wage Scotland manager at the Poverty Alliance, the franchise partner delivering Living Wage accreditation in Scotland. Gail spent five years as a senior policy and development officer at Carnegie UK, a UK charitable foundation, where she led the delivery of its ‘Fulfilling Work’ programme, focusing on policy and employer interventions required to make work better.

Natalie Jutla is employee benefits and financial wellbeing lead at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Natalie is an experienced engagement, employee financial wellbeing, employee value proposition (EVP) and employee benefits professional, with a demonstrated track record of working in the civil service, public and private sectors. 2022 winner of the EB Employee Benefits professional of the year. She is skilled in all employee benefits, salary sacrifice schemes, employee financial capability, and wellbeing strategies and schemes. Whether Natalie is implementing an EVP strategy resulting in an 27% increase in employee satisfaction in three years or delivering new employee benefits projects that have produced employer savings of more than £5 million in as many years, she proves she is ahead of the curve when identifying trends, new benefits and evaluating gaps within current strategies and practices. Her people-driven approach has seen her implement a fully harmonised employee benefits platform for 36,500 employees across 17 different payrolls that is producing over £45k per month savings for her employees whilst also delivering a fit-for-purpose low employer cost solution to a fully engaged workforce with a 95% active user rate. Natalie holds a master’s degree focused on Human Resources Management/Personnel Administration and is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD.

Laura Stewart-Smith is head of client engagement, workplace at Aviva. Laura has worked for Aviva since 2005 in a variety of roles gaining significant expertise, specifically in the communications arena, working with a wide variety of employers and developing engaging materials that convey important messages.
