About this event
Each year the UK economy loses 70 000 technicians' more than it recruits due to retirement. Approximately 75% of all UK businesses utilise skilled technicians, amounting to a workforce of 1,500,000. Consequently and unless this attrition is addressed there will be substantive impacts on the UK economy going forward. The Technicians commitment is a response to this existential crisis.
This talk will outline reasons for this shortfall and then introduce the "Technician commitment" whose remit is designed to correct this imbalance. In particular the talk will elaborate on a key principle of the commitment, namely Professional Registration, which is designed to recognise and accredit Technician skills commensurate with competent discharge of their full role.
Laurence Dawkins-Hall is a Professional Registration Support Mentor with the Science Council & a Teaching Technician at the Cancer Centre, University of Leicester
