Have you looked at learning stories? They were developed specifically to address the shortcomings in traditional assessments.
In a nutshell, the learning story illustrates a child's development in a way that is both understandable and engaging for parents. Not only do they capture the learning, teachers love to write them - - they are good for the soul and reconnect them to the reasons they chose early education as a career.
