Estimating Dermal Bioavailability of PAHs and the Implications for Risk Assessment

About this event

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are common in urban soils, especially in made ground associated with former industrialised areas where the burning or carbonisation of wood, coke and coal has taken place. PAH are also created by natural phenomena such as forest or peatland fires. Some PAHs are carcinogenic and their presence in soils can pose a public health risk.

British Geological Survey, along with WSP and National Grid, have developed a new and innovative physiologically-based in vitro laboratory method for dermal absorption and analysis of PAH in different complex matrices (including soil, artificial skin and a synthetic receptor solution to replace the need for human or animal skin).

In this webinar, speakers from BGS, WSP and National Grid will discuss this innovative new method for measuring the in vitro dermal bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and implications for risk assessment.

This project won the 2024 Brownfield Award for Best Research or Application in the Advancement of Science, Technology or Digital Innovation in the Brownfield Sector, and the Judges' Choice Award.
