The second Deputyship Day of 2023, originally scheduled to occur in York has officially moved online! Hosted by PADSN (Public Authority Deputies Support Network) in collaboration with Finders International, our CPD partner. This event is a must-attend for both public and private deputyship professionals.

The PADSN Deputyship Day is a platform for industry professionals to discuss and share knowledge on hot topics, issues, and challenges facing the industry in the North of England. The event offers fantastic networking opportunities with like-minded professionals, enabling you to make new connections and develop existing ones. Our line-up of speakers includes industry experts across a variety of specialities in the field, and with their knowledge and proficiency, they will provide valuable insight and guidance to help you stay ahead in the field.

    David Lockwood

    Dave is a former Deputy Decision Maker appointed by the Court of Protection in England and Wales. Dave’s experience comes from working in four diverse local authorities across London and the South East, dealing with varied services, ongoing legislation changes and increased workloads with decreasing resources; managing expectations from both the public and internal colleagues. Not only does Dave have experience of acting as a Deputy under the Court of Protection, he is also well versed in the complexities of dealing with the statutory obligation of providing funerals under the Public Health Act. Dave is also one of the founding members and former chair of APAD (The Association of Public Authority Deputies).

    Kat Harrington-Milne Investment Director @ Rathbones

    Kat has worked with recipients of personal injury awards for 20 years. She provides specialist advice to clients, professional and lay deputies and guardians, and trustees of personal injury awards. Kat joined Rathbones in 2020 from Barclays Wealth. Kat is passionate about helping her clients, together with their legal representatives, take control of their financial future. Her goal is to ensure every client can make informed decisions, driven by a clear understanding on how this might affect their long term financial position. Her advice is tailored to the individual needs of each client, depending on their circumstances, as well as the nature and severity of their injuries. She is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments and a Chartered Financial Planner of the Chartered Insurance Institute. Kat is working towards the Society of Trust and Estates Practitioners Diploma.

    Gemma Hopper Senior Associate & COP Solicitor @ Nelson Law

    Gemma Hopper is a Senior Associate at Nelsons’ Court of Protection team and an experienced Solicitor who qualified in 2016 with the Office of the Public Guardian. She deals with a range of Court of Protection work, including managing property and financial affairs under the authority of attorney and deputy appointments. Gemma is also a Director at Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) and a Trustee for Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, which gives her a unique understanding of the role of a Trustee and their obligations. Her areas of expertise include mental capacity, Powers of Attorney, Personal Injury Trusts, and charity administration.

    Amy Kirby Investment Manager @ Rathbones

    Amy joined Rathbones in 2013. She manages private client and Personal Injury and Court of Protection portfolios. Amy is a member of the Rathbones Fixed Income Collectives Committee. She is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment, having obtained the Chartered Wealth Manager qualification in 2017. In doing so, she became the youngest person to achieve this qualification aged 21. Amy also holds the CII Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. Amy was the winner of the Rising Talent Award at the 2021 PIMFA Diversity and Inclusion Awards.

    Ben Slater is a dedicated and highly qualified Social Worker with a wealth of professional experience. His impressive career includes serving multiple local authorities and successfully managing a children's centre. What truly sets Ben apart is his unwavering passion for making a positive impact on individuals' lives and local communities. Holding a prestigious 1st Class honours degree from the University of Lincoln, Ben's expertise extends beyond traditional roles. He has also shared his knowledge as a guest lecturer at various universities and currently guides and supports aspiring social workers as a practice supervisor. Ben's qualifications are extensive, including accreditation as a financial vulnerability assessor, Montreal cognitive assessor, and ACEII Assessor. Additionally, he excels at delivering educational talks and has been a featured speaker at numerous PADSN events.

    Ian Macara Senior Partner @ J E Bennett Law

    Ian Macara is one of only 62 accredited Panel Deputies for the Office of the Public Guardian in England and Wales. He is also among approximately 10 Public Guardians appointed by the organization. Ian is a fully accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) and the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP). He serves as a Dementia Friends Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society and is a member of the Professional Deputies Forum (PDF). With a remarkable legal background, Ian has assisted a diverse range of vulnerable clients, offering timely advice and support. His expertise spans family law proceedings, accident claims, and managing the legal, financial, and care needs of vulnerable individuals, often handling substantial assets. Ian’s pragmatic approach allows him to effectively anticipate challenges, minimize risks, and guide clients through unexpected circumstances.
