Early Diagnosis & Detection through Innovation in Personal Care Products

About this event

The acceptance and growth of Point of Care (PoC) diagnostics surpasses the growth of conventional diagnostic setups owing to their cost-benefit, convenience, and immediacy of results, reducing an overall healthcare burden. Innovations like the integration of microfluidics, biosensors, cloud-based data sharing, and biocompatible coatings for sample stabilization in PoC diagnostics have been deployed in the industry, further enhancing their accuracy and efficiency.

To address the customers' need for convenience in sample collection, a new trend of amalgamating personal care products with PoC diagnostics has emerged. As these products are widely used by people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, they can be designed to interact with various biomolecules or biomarkers in the body to indicate the presence of a disease (cancer, allergies, hormonal imbalance, stress, etc.) or infection (bacterial, fungal or viral). Diagnostic kits, for example, may contain pre-packaged personal care items that users can deploy to collect samples (menstrual blood, urine, sweat, sputum, etc.) before transporting them to a laboratory or using them in a PoC device. The development of new PoC diagnostic devices specially designed to function with personal care products may lead to the development of previously unimaginable diagnostic tests and new business avenues.

Overall, the development of personal care products in PoC diagnostics and the importance of thinking creatively about how existing products can be repurposed for new applications has the potential to improve healthcare outcomes for patients, particularly those living in resource-constrained settings with limited access to conventional laboratory facilities. For example, Palma Group Sa, Crystal Health Solutions, Zorbentz, Prospect Diagnostics, and Qvin are some major players that have marketed products in the domain.
