About this event
Modern construction utilizes steel as a construction material as it is versatile, easy to fabricate, economical and more importantly aids in rapid construction saving time and money in projects. The major drawback is the poor structural stability of steel structures at the time of fire. Strength of steel rapidly diminishes as the temperature increases, making steel structures unsafe in a fire accident. The use of intumescent coatings to protect steel structures from fire is now extensive. It is specified and used in most of steel constructions from large infrastructure projects like airports & stadiums to small warehouses.
Intumescent coatings, when applied correctly, will provide structural stability to steel structures up to 4 hours when subject to fire. The coatings are part of the Passive Fire Protection system that provides time for people to escape and for the active fire protection system to work. Apart from fire protection, intumescent coating systems should also address issues related to corrosion protection and long term durability of steel structures exposed to C3 or C4 external exposure conditions (as per ISO 12944). It is a primary requirement that intumescent coatings provide long term corrosion protection and durability along with fire protection properties.
