About this event
This presentation will provide an overview of the state of affairs with regard to the current epidemic of violence in the American healthcare workplace. We will review the etiology of violence in healthcare, including the external and internal factors contributing to it and who is most affected by it. Leveraging actual events from healthcare settings, we will dissect the elements that may contribute to possible violence in an effort to illustrate potential de-escalation interventions to employ before violence occurs. We will review best practices for preventing and addressing violence on a policy level as well as on an individual incident level. We will discuss strategies in caring not only for patients at risk of violence but also for other patients who are receiving care when the threat of violence occurs. The presentation will also cover the importance of proper documentation of efforts to prevent and address violent situations.

About the presenter
Alex Skog, MD, FACEP, is a fulltime practicing emergency physician serving rural and urban communities through his clinical work at the Department of Veteran Affairs, Providence Willamette Falls Hospital, as well as his volunteer work with Portland Street Medicine. Dr. Skog currently serves as President of the Oregon Chapter of the American College of Emergency Medicine where he has worked to improve healthcare for his community and coworkers through lobbying to address the current crisis of violence in healthcare. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a Hubert Global Health Fellow. He completed his residency training at Oregon Health & Science University. In addition, Dr. Skog has multiple research publications, and he has authored multiple medical textbook chapters.
