Sexual Misconduct: How to Protect Yourself and Your Patients

In this lecture, we will describe the continuum of sexual exploitation, including sexual or gender-based discrimination, harassment and abuse. We will discuss power dynamics that exist in medicine and medical education, including ways to decrease the power differentials for a safer working and educational environment. Additionally, we will review what to do when faced with harassment, including a discussion of employer responsibilities in the prevention, investigation, and corrective measures of sexual misconduct. Finally, we will explore specific ways to create a more inclusive environment.

This course fulfills the Illinois mandate for 1 hour of training on sexual harassment prevention.  All Illinois physicians must complete training in this area before renewing their license by the July 31 deadline.

About the presenter

Jamie Mansell, PhD, LAT, ATC, is the Director of Athletic Training Education and Associate Professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and is a licensed athletic trainer. She has her BS in Athletic Training from Towson University and her Master of Education and PhD in Kinesiology with a concentration in Athletic Training from Temple University. Her research efforts include sexual misconduct in athletic training and has several peer-reviewed publications in this content area. She has also given numerous local, state, regional, and national talks on sexual misconduct recognition and reporting in athletic training and has served as the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) representative to the US Safe Sport medical advisory group for the development of sexual misconduct recognition training for healthcare providers. Currently, Dr. Mansell is serving on a work group through NATA to create a white paper on sexual misconduct in Athletic Training.
