Cannabis in Illinois: 2025 Update

About this Event:

The expanded availability of marijuana and other cannabis-derived products continues to raise public health issues that need to be considered as researchers gather more data about the effects of their use over time. According to a February press release, Illinois dispensaries reported more than $2 billion of cannabis product was sold in 2024, a 2.5% increase over 2023. As cannabis use is rising across all demographics, physicians could benefit from increased knowledge about the prevalence of cannabis use and the public health risks and benefits. Recognizing the increased likelihood that patients may be engaging in the use of cannabis or cannabis-derived products, physicians need better information about how to ask patients about their usage pattern, counseling regarding harm reduction, and what medical conditions might necessitate more cautious guidance.

Join the Illinois State Medical Society for this webinar presented by Natania Crane, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Director of the UIC Recovery Clinic, to learn more about the prevalence of cannabis-derived product use in Illinois, how to ask and address the implications of cannabis use with patients, and cues for concern as it relates to substance use disorders.

Presenter:

Dr. Natania Crane is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Associate Director of the UIC Recovery Clinic. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her research utilizes multiple methods (i.e., fMRI, EEG, cognitive, clinical, and self-report measures) to examine the brain and behavioral risk factors and consequences of substance use disorders, especially cannabis use disorder. An important aspect of her research is studying the relationship between clinical mental health factors and substance use, particularly between depression and cannabis use.

Dr. Crane received her PhD in Clinical Psychology, completed her Clinical Internship and T32 Postdoctoral Fellowship at UIC, with an emphasis in Neuropsychology.
