About this event
The Illinois General Assembly recently enacted changes to the Illinois Controlled Substances Act that will require prescribers to advise and inform patients about the addiction potential of opioids, and to also offer a prescription for an opioid antagonist (e.g., naloxone). This comes on the heels of an earlier law that requires pharmacists to offer the dispensing of an opioid antagonist with every opioid prescription.
This activity is intended to change prescribers' interactions with patients for whom they are writing an opioid prescription. This activity will provide a summary of an update to current law that requires prescribers to advise such patients as to the addictive nature of opioids and the potential risk and harm that may occur as a result of opioid use. Participants will also be informed about a new requirement for prescribing an opioid to a patient: The prescriber must make the patient aware of opioid antagonist medications and offer to prescribe them. Finally, participants will be advised of the necessity of documenting in the patient's medical record that a conversation or communication on these two topics had occurred during the patient encounter in which an opioid was prescribed.
About the presenter
Brianna M. McQuade, PharmD, BCACP, MHPE has years of clinical and research experience. After graduating pharmacy school, she completed two years of pharmacy practice residency and a two-year academic research fellowship. She has expertise in health professions education, having completed her Masters in Health Professions Education in 2020. Her current role is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, and a clinical pharmacist at Mile Square Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center that serves the Chicago and Rockford, IL areas. She specializes in complex pharmacotherapy for underserved populations, focusing on substance use disorders and mental health. She practices in an interdisciplinary team that focuses on improving access to and quality of medication assisted recovery (MAR). As a member of the MAR team, she provides pharmacotherapy and medical education to trainees, other health professionals, and patients using non-stigmatizing language and approaches. She has evaluated implicit bias among healthcare team members and is published on the topic.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:
- Discuss the changes included in PA 102-1040 which amends the Illinois Controlled Substance Act and Pharmacy Practice Act.
- Describe factors associated with an increased risk of overdose in patients receiving an appropriate prescription for an opioid analgesic.
- Identify appropriate naloxone route, dose, and dosing frequency when writing a prescription
