Illinois State Medical Society invites you to their event

Human Trafficking: Practical Approaches and Resources in a Healthcare Setting

About this event

About this Event:

Healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to identify and assist human trafficking victims due to their front-line access and trusted role in the community. In a 2017 survey of 127 human trafficking survivors, 69% of respondents interviewed reported having had access to health services at some time during their exploitation. Sex and labor trafficking survivors have unique needs and physicians can play an important role in survivor support and resource navigation.

Participants will learn how to effectively aid survivors by gaining knowledge about available anti-trafficking resources and support networks. The session will also cover how to conduct a trauma-informed history and exam, ensuring that medical care is compassionate and respectful of the survivor's experiences. Attendees will also explore strategies for safe assessment, prioritizing the survivor's well-being throughout the healthcare encounter. Actionable preventative measures and how to get involved in anti-trafficking efforts will also be covered.

The Illinois State Medical Society invites you to join Traci Kurtzer, MD, the Medical Director for Trauma Informed Care and Education for the Department of Obstetrics at Northwestern Medicine, for a program that will equip healthcare professional with practical tools and approaches to support survivors of sex and labor trafficking.
