JEC Observer: Current trends in the global composites industry 2020-2025

2020 has been an exceptional year, on account of the very nature of the crisis and its scope. The impact of the health crisis has been felt across the world and decreases in GDP can be as severe as -15% in some countries. Impact on the composites industry has also been felt, as in 2020, the downturn is expected to be around -14% in volume and all sectors of application were affected, with exception of the Wind Industry.

Philip COLE, Director of Members and Partnerships @ WindEurope

Philip is the Director of Members and Partnerships at WindEurope (formerly EWEA), a trade association based in Brussels that represents over 400 companies, research organisations and national associations within the wind and wider renewable energy industries through its staff of 65 people. WindEurope engages and advises EU and national Governments on policy and regulation, analyses and tracks developments in the industry through its dedicated team of Market Intelligence analysts, organises industry-focused conferences and large-scale events and manages the European Technology and Innovation Platform for Wind on behalf of the European Commission.

Philip joined WindEurope in 2016 where he manages the relationships and strategy with all WindEurope members, typically at Senior Vice President level and above. He is also part of the founding team of RE-Source which is now the world’s largest annual gathering of renewable energy buyers and suppliers. Prior to WindEurope he spent 10 years in the FMCG industry in sales and commercial strategy roles with a focus on Europe and the Middle East within global organisations such as Kellogg’s, Lindt & Sprüngli and L’Oréal

Julien DELEUZE, Partner @ Estin &Co

Julien Deleuze is President at Estin & Co. He has 16 years of experience in management and strategy consulting.Before joining Estin & Co, he was project manager at CM International. He runs the Estin & Co office in London.

Julien Deleuze assists the directors of large European groups in their growth and value creation strategies, group strategies, business strategies for their main activities, programs of organic growth and large acquisitions.He regularly assists private equity funds in strategic due diligences, portfolio performance enhancement initiatives and exit strategies.

He has extensive experience in energy (Electricity and energy services including energy, Oil & Gas including unconventional…), in infrastructure and real estate (technical equipment and materials, construction, engineering services, certification, real estate development), in financial services (wealth management and private banking, asset management, entrepreneurial family offices...).

Julien Deleuze has an engineering degree from l’Ecole Polytechnique (Paris) and a Master of Science and Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University (USA).

Marc DOYLE, Executive Vice President, Business Line @ Solvay

Marc Doyle, Executive Vice President, Business Line of Solvay’s Composite Materials Global Business Unit, a technology and innovation leader that provides advanced composite materials and adhesives to the aerospace, defense, energy, automotive and consumer markets.

In this role Mr. Doyle leads the business to include overseeing global quality, product management, business operations, strategic key account management and Sales across adhesive and composites customers.

Mr. Doyle holds a B.Sc. in Materials Science and a M.Sc. in Composite Materials from Imperial College, London, and served as a Research Assistant in the Laboratory of Polymer and Composite Technology (LTC) at the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

Karl-Heinz FUELLER, Head of Future Outside & Materials @ Daimler

Dr. Fueller studied mechanical engineering with a focus on materials engineering and forming technology at the University of Stuttgart and at George-Washington University in Washington D.C., USA. After completing his PHD on the subject of ceramic brakes, he joined the former Daimler-Benz AG. After various project stations at the Sindelfingen press plant and chassis development, he took over the management of the topic of forming technology in Daimler Research in 2000.

Since then, he has been responsible for numerous innovation projects and thematic areas in the fields of materials, design concepts and manufacturing technology. In 2017 he got appointed adjunct Professor at Swinburn University in Melbourne, Australia. In his current position he is responsible for future Exterior and Materials in the Daimler Research organization. In addition, he coordinates the flagship project Flexcar at the research campus in ARENA2036.

Marcio SANDRI, President of the Composites business @ Owens Corning (NYSE: OC)

Owens Corning posted 2020 sales of $7.1 billion and employs 19,000 people in 33 countries. Marcio is an Executive Officer of the company.

Immediately prior to his appointment, Marcio served as Vice President of Global Strategy and Operations for the Composites business, where he was responsible for strategic marketing, manufacturing operations, global strategy, and growth projects.

Marcio has advanced through a variety of positions with increasing responsibility since joining Owens Corning in 2000 as commercial director for composites in Latin America. In 2004, he was appointed general manager for the region. In 2007, he was named vice president and managing director of the Americas region. From 2011 to 2013, Marcio resided in Shanghai, China, where he led the Asia Pacific composites business, simultaneously holding the position of vice president and managing director of Global Glass Reinforcements.

Prior to joining Owens Corning, Marcio worked at Dow Chemical in Latin America and the U.S. where he held various positions related to sales, marketing and new business development.

Marcio earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Federal University of Parana and studied business administration at the University of Sao Paulo. He is fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish. He is a Board member of the Toledo Public Schools Foundation, in Toledo, Ohio. He is an avid reader of quantum physics.

Xavier VIGOR, Vice-President Technologies and Industrial Management @ Air Liquide

Xavier Vigor began his professional career in 1988 within the Air Liquide Group. He has successively held positions in research and development, sales, engineering and management, always in innovative fields. In particular, he has been Managing Director of the Chicago and the Loges-en-Josas (near Paris) Research Centers, of small standard production plants Engineering, of the Group industrial IT. Recently he was the Managing Director of Air Liquide advanced Technologies in Grenoble.

Today, he is Vice-President Technologies (CTO) and Industrial Management of the Air Liquide World Business Line for Hydrogen EnergyXavier Vigor is a graduate of École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures.
