Needling with Intention: Understanding Pain, Tissue, and Treatment Response Featuring Brian Bowen, L.Ac., Founder of DĀO Needle Company, OUTCH Ointment, Integrative Health Inc. & Better Human Company

About this event

Pain is not simply a reflection of tissue damage, and effective needling requires more than identifying where a patient hurts. Not all pain is the same. Not all tissue is the same. So why would we needle it the same?

Developed by Brian Bowen, Dāo Needle Therapy is an integrative approach to musculoskeletal needling that combines traditional acupuncture principles with modern pain science, biomechanics, functional assessment, and tissue-specific needling strategies.

Central to this approach is the Ashi point mechanical threshold. Rather than viewing an Ashi point simply as a painful location, practitioners learn to assess changes in mechanical sensitivity before, during, and after treatment—creating a practical therapeutic meter to help guide clinical decision-making.

The presentation explores how needling strategies can be modified according to pain mechanism, tissue type, tissue position, and desired therapeutic response. Contractile and inert tissues may respond differently, as can postural and phasic muscles. Tissue length, tension, positioning, and mechanical loading can further influence assessment and treatment.

Participants will also explore how needle design, shape, gauge, depth, and technique may influence tissue response and how

Ultimately, practitioners are encouraged to move beyond simply asking, “Where should I put the needle?” and instead ask, “What am I trying to change—and how will I know when I have changed it?

What you will learn:

  • Define Dāo Needle Therapy and describe how its assessment and treatment framework differs from and complements traditional acupuncture and dry needling.
  • Differentiate major mechanisms contributing to musculoskeletal pain and explain how the suspected pain mechanism can influence therapeutic strategy.
  • Explain the clinical significance of Ashi point mechanical thresholds and use changes in mechanical sensitivity as a therapeutic meter for assessment, treatment, and reassessment.
  • Recognize how tissue characteristics influence needling strategy, including differences between contractile and inert tissue and between postural and phasic muscle.
  • Explain how tissue length, tension, anatomical position, and mechanical loading can influence assessment and response to needling.
  • Evaluate needle selection and technique as therapeutic variables, including the potential influence of needle design, shape, gauge, depth, and manipulation on tissue response.
  • Apply an Assess → Treat → Reassess → Adapt framework to improve clinical decision-making and individualize musculoskeletal treatment.
  • Integrate passive and active therapeutic strategies within a broader biomechanical and functional approach to chronic pain and postural dysfunction.

Brian is the founder and developer of Dāo Needle Therapy, an integrative needling system that combines traditional acupuncture principles with modern pain science, biomechanics, and functional assessment to provide a more intentional approach to treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.

He is the founder of Integrative Health Inc., a multidisciplinary healthcare clinic established in 2001, and the inventor and developer of the Omni 360 Face Cradle, a patented positioning system designed to expand treatment possibilities for practitioners. Brian is also the creator of Outch Ointment and has extensive experience in the health, wellness, and spa industries.

As a continuing education provider, Brian is known for his high-energy, passionate, and engaging teaching style, bringing complex clinical concepts to life through practical, real-world application. He teaches practitioners throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and has previously served as faculty at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

His passion is bridging traditional therapeutic concepts with modern clinical reasoning and biomechanics to give practitioners practical tools they can immediately apply to improve assessment, treatment precision, and patient outcomes.
