Welcome to an interactive Diabetic Foot webinar.

Prof. Venu Kavarthapu is the orthopaedic lead of the King’s Multi-disciplinary Diabetic Foot Unit and has set up the functional limb salvage Charcot foot reconstruction service that has been recognised nationally. He also established the ‘Multidisciplinary and Surgical Reconstruction of Charcot Foot Symposium' and ‘King’s Charcot Foot Reconstruction Cadaver Workshop’ course in London. The Diabetic Foot Reconstruction Fellowship that is offered in his unit is popular among the foot and ankle-trained surgeons. His clinical research interest is on Charcot foot and infection clearance surgery of the diabetic foot. His other academic responsibilities include honorary senior lecturer at King's College London, associate editor of Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma, member of British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Education Committee, Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, and President of International Association of Diabetic Foot Surgeons.  


Dr. Luuk Smeets, vascular surgeon at Rijnstate Hospital, Arnhem, Netherlands.

Dr. Smeets has been working at Rijnstate since 2010. After graduating from the University of Utrecht in 2000, did he work at the St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein as a general practitioner in the Surgery Department. The academic part of the surgeon training started in 2002 at the UMC Utrecht. From 2004 to 2008, did he continued his training at the Hospital Group Twente in Almelo, where the foundation was also laid for his expertise in the care of the diabetic foot.

From 2008 to 2010 did he work as a general surgeon and CHIVO vascular surgery (Surgeon in Continuation Education) at the Maximá Medical Center Veldhoven and Eindhoven.

In 2005 he obtained his doctorate with his thesis "Remote endarterectomy; the endovascular alternative to bypass surgery".


Clinical Ass. Prof. Hans Gottlieb is an orthopedic consultant and Head of the Section of Infections and Amputations in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Herlev Hospital, which he established in September 2015, and a Board member in the Danish Society of Orthopaedic Infections. His ambition is to centralize the treatment of bone and soft tissue infections in Region Hovedstaden, and through research and clinical work, to optimize the treatment of these difficult and multi-morbid patients. He has ongoing research projects in wound healing and intraosseous antibiotics in human and animal models.

The orthopedic department at Herlev Hospital has a catchment area of 435,000 and carries out 6000 operations a year. The bone infection department at Herlev Hospital was set up in 2015 and is the first multidisciplinary unit in Denmark dedicated to the treatment of patients with bone or joint infection. Since then more than 300 patients with Osteomyelitis have been treated. It has 18 beds and offers services across orthopedics, microbiology, infectious diseases, and plastic surgery.
