The Cu-Zr system is amongst the most studied binary glass-forming systems, yet has not been subject to any measurements of interdiffusion. It is of interest to correlate atomic diffusivities with changes in packing density that can be strongly dependent on composition.
During this Nanotalk, Dr. Yurii Ivanov presents a novel method for measuring atomic interdiffusivity in amorphous Cu-Zr metallic glass close to the glass-transition temperature Tg by both in-situ TEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Specifically, he presents a direct observation of the Kirkendall drift of interlayer interfaces in both amorphous and supercooled liquid states (i.e. below and above Tg) and the associated voiding in the liquid. This voiding is particularly interesting for the controlled development of nanoscale porosity in a range of applications.
