[MM] Constructive Conflict in Meetings: How Friction Leads to Better Decisions

About this event

Many meetings appear remarkably harmonious. Everyone is polite. Nobody raises their voice. And by the end, everyone seems to agree.

The real debate then happens afterwards in one-to-one conversations, side chats, and private messages. In that context, harmony in the room is not necessarily a sign of a strong team. It may indicate that important objections and competing perspectives are being withheld.

In this compact Lunch & Learn, I will show you how to enable disagreement and robust debate in meetings without allowing the discussion to become personal. You will learn to distinguish constructive challenge from destructive conflict and create the conditions in which different perspectives genuinely inform decisions.

Research on psychological safety suggests that teams learn and improve better when people can ask questions, acknowledge mistakes, and challenge others without fear of negative interpersonal consequences. Research on team conflict also shows that conflict is not inherently productive. What matters is what people disagree about and how they handle it.

What you will learn:

  • How to tell whether your team is genuinely aligned or simply withholding disagreement
  • What happens when criticism and dissent surface only after the meeting
  • How to enable robust debate without making it personal
  • How to move from disagreement back to a clear decision

Methods we will explore:

  • Constructive challenge: How to make different positions visible
  • Issue, not individual: How to bring conflict back to the substance of the discussion
  • The counter-position: How to deliberately introduce an alternative perspective
  • The close: How to turn a contentious discussion into a shared decision

What you'll leave with:

Practical techniques you can apply immediately in your meetings.

Format:

10–15 minutes of expert input, followed by 10–15 minutes of open discussion and Q&A.
