About this event
It comes as no surprise to anyone in the cannabis industry that it is difficult to succeed in the cannabis industry. That's just one reason why it's so impressive when we see a family farm dive into the deep end of licensing and come out the other end, providing exceptional craft product to the legal market.
Enter Serena Donovan, Owner and CEO of Because You Cann, the second micro-cultivation facility licensed in Alberta. Also known as the CannaNana, Serena and her husband Ian operate Because You Cann in addition to farming 4000 acres as a family business with their five adult children.
As a Vulcan County Councillor, Serena identified the need for farmers to diversify their crops and look at new ways to utilize farming resources. That pursuit evolved into the year long process of cannabis licensing and everything that became Because You Cann.
Years into legalization, there are still massive problems (known and unknown) with the way cannabis regulation and taxation have been implemented. If you're looking for ways to anticipate and address issues facing craft producers before they arise, there's no better way than to learn from those who have gone before, fought the fight, and are thriving in the market. The story of Serena and Because You Cann is full of lessons that will directly benefit you and your cannabis business.
We could not be more proud to share the State of Craft stage with cannabis trailblazers like Serena Donovan!
For Episode 22, CertiCraft presents:
Serena Donovan, CEO & President of Because You Cann Cannabis Co
Serena is the CEO and Sole Owner of Because You Cann Inc., the 2nd Health Canada licensed Micro Cultivation facility in Alberta and 25th in Canada. She and her husband are proud farmers in Mossleigh, Alberta. They have five children between the two to them and five grandchildren. Serena became intrigued with cannabis after seeing the positive properties the cannabis plant had in her life as a medical patient. She decided her love for the plant could also be a way to diversify the farm. Her daughters have remained in rural Alberta to “grow” with her and she is pleased to offer employment to local residents in the area. The goal has been and continues to be, to empower women and their cannabis use, free of judgement and ending the negative stigma.
“It’s an exciting time to be part of an emerging industry. I’m proud have my daughters at my side, to show the world that through our literal blood, sweat and buckets of tears, we made this dream come true.” -Serena Donovan
