METEORAGE invites you to their event

How to apply the recent evolutions of the lightning standards in your activities?

or

About this event

The lightning protection world has recently experienced some major changes in standards, as shown by the latest versions of:

  • IEC 62305-1 (relative to general principles of lightning protection)
  • IEC 62305-2 (relative to Lightning risks evaluation)
  • IEC 62305-3 (relative to physical damages on structures and safety human risks)
  • IEC 62305-4 (relative to electrical and electronic systems within structures)
  • and Annex L of IEC 61400 (relative to lightning protection in wind energy sector).

These revisions include important adjustments to lightning risk management, such as:

  • the adoption of the lightning strike-point density (Nsg) to replace the use of lightning flash density (Ng).
  • the use of temporary preventive measures activated by a Thunderstorm warning system (TWS) compliant with IEC 62793.
  • The amendment to Annex L (wind energy sector) stipulates, among other things, that compliance with the IEC 62793 standard on TWS will become the overriding criterion.

Without forgetting to mention other contributions that are still present or even reinforced, such as :

  • IEC 62305-1 and IEC 6230-4: "decouple from power or communication networks to reduce the risk and frequency of damage".
  • IEC 62305-3: "determine when to trigger an inspection to verify the effectiveness of lightning protection devices".

We are proud to welcome Marina Bernardi, Secretary of the Technical Comittee 81 of the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) as our guest speaker for this webinar. She will share the IEC's strategic vision and summarize the evolutions of the lightning standards released in 2024, mentioning the publication of the new editions of the 62305 series, 14 years after the last one, the TC8’s vision, what this changes, and the inclusion, over the years, of lightning detection in the standards, both with new standards such as 62858 and 62793, but also in the reference standards (-1,-2,-3,4) where prevention has progressed.

All along the webinar, we will discuss the use of Nsg to assess certain risk components, particularly those related to direct lightning strikes. Another important aspect is the use of TWS, which can reduce certain lightning-related risks and contribute to the sizing of protective equipment

This webinar is aimed at engineers, consultants and lightning risk professionals who wish to understand and apply the recent changes in standards to improve their lightning protection systems.

On the agenda:

  • Update of standards 61-400 Annex L, 62305-1 to 62305-4: Explanation of recent developments in lightning protection standards.
  • Nsg: The importance of using this data for effective protection studies.
  • TWS: Their role in anticipating risks and optimizing the safety of installations.
  • Q&A session
