Robust or Bust: Transitioning Design to Manufacturing

About this event

A perfectly designed part will not perform perfectly without a manufacturing process that preserves the design intent. Even when the material, geometry, and tooling have been carefully optimized for the application, the manufacturing process can introduce new weak points that significantly influence the structural performance and long-term durability of the finished component.

In the final session of the Robust or Bust webinar series, we will bridge the gap between ideal design and real-world manufacturing. We will explore how manufacturing decisions and process-induced effects can influence the performance of molded components and discuss strategies for designing parts that are not only structurally sound and manufacturable, but how to manufacture them in a way that maintains the original design intent.

Structural FEA and Moldflow provide powerful tools for understanding this connection. We will discuss how manufacturing-induced characteristics, such as weld lines and fiber orientation, can be incorporated into structural analysis to better represent the properties and performance of the finished part. By connecting the manufacturing process to structural performance, engineers can identify potential weak points that may otherwise be missed when analyzing the idealized design alone.

Building on the previous sessions covering robust design, material performance, and long-term loading, this final webinar will bring these concepts together to show why robust product design must extend beyond the CAD model and into the manufacturing process.
