About this event

Prof. Martin McNally, Chair

Prof. McNally is specialized in limb reconstruction, with a particular interest in bone reconstruction in osteomyelitis and infected fractures. He was the lead surgeon of the Oxford BIU for over 20 years. He spends most of his time on infection management and runs research projects on diagnostics, the outcome of treatments for bone infection, and local antibiotic delivery systems. Prof. McNally is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics at the University of Oxford and has published over two hundred papers, book chapters, and articles on musculoskeletal infection and reconstruction surgery. He contributes regularly to national and international meetings on bone infection and runs the annual Oxford Bone Infection Conference (OBIC). He is Past-President of the European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS) and a member of the Research and Education Committees of the European Federation for Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT).

Case presenters

Prof. Marc Hanschen

Prof. Hanschen, Orthopaedics, and Trauma Surgery and PI Trauma-Immunology at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Technical University in Munich. He began his clinical career at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. Before moving to the Klinikum Rechts der Isar he undertook a PostDoc Fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Prof. Hanschen is the Head of Pelvic and Lower Limb Fractures. A special interest lies in reconstructive surgery and the management of post-traumatic bone infections (FRI). He is currently head of the Department of Experimental Trauma Surgery, where his focus is on research into the post-traumatic immune response.

Mr. Jamie Ferguson

Mr. Ferguson works as a Consultant in Limb Reconstruction Surgery in the Bone Infection Unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in the Oxford University Hospitals, UK. Mr. Ferguson has a special interest in managing complex long-bone infections, fracture-related infections, and limb reconstruction. His research interests include limb reconstruction techniques in bone infection, osteomyelitis, fracture-related infection, local antibiotic carriers, and infected non-union.

Ass. Prof. Jon Carlson

Ass. Prof. Carlson earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Philosophy from Indiana University and earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He also worked as an EMT in Phoenix, Arizona prior to medical school. Dr. Carlson completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at the Detroit Medical Center under the direction of Prof. Rahul Vaidya and Prof. Stephen E. Lemos. Dr. Carlson completed additional training for Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery with a fellowship at the University of Louisville under the direction of Prof. Craig Roberts and Prof. David Seligson. Dr. Carlson has a particular interest in orthopaedic trauma surgery, especially pelvic and acetabular surgery, periarticular fractures, nonunions, and infections as well as anterior total and partial hip arthroplasty. He was awarded the resident teaching award for full-time faculty in 2016 and holds the rank of Assistant Professor as well as Associate Program Director.
