Toward Participation: Unpacking Leadership of the Laity in the Church

The Catholic Apostolate Center and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth are pleased to announce the fifth webinar in a series surrounding synodality on August 25, 2022 at 2 pm EDT. This webinar, Toward Participation: Unpacking Leadership of the Laity in the Church, will explore themes of leadership throughout the Church. Included in this webinar is a discussion of engaging the laity into leadership positions, co-responsibility with priests and the laity, and promoting shared work as part of mission for the Church.

The webinar will be moderated by Paul Jarzembowski, Associate Director for the Laity for the Secretariat of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth at the USCCB. This webinar will feature Bishop Daniel Flores of the Diocese of Brownsville, Mark Erdosy, the Executive Director of Mission Integration at Marian University in Indianapolis, Matthew Manion, the Faculty Director for the Center for Church Management at Villanova University outside of Philadelphia, Helen Osman, President of SIGNIS, an international Catholic communications association, headquartered in Brussels and Rosie Chinea Shawver, the Executive Director of Catholic Association of Latino Leaders (CALL), based in Los Angeles.

    Mark Erdosy Executive Director of Mission Integration @ Marian University in Indianapolis

    Mark Erdosy, serves as the Executive Director of Mission Integration at Marian University in Indianapolis. He is also an adjunct faculty member of Marian University's Theology/Philosophy Department. He has been active in parish ministry serving as a youth minister, college campus minister, and pastoral associate. He has also served on diocesan organizations as well as national organizations such as the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, and the National Association for Lay Ministry. Mark is widely considered as one of the leading experts on young adult discernment and formation. His areas of expertise include young adult discernment and formation, liturgical and sacramental theology, and Franciscan theology especially as it relates to prayer and theological reflection in the Franciscan tradition.

    Matthew Manion Faculty Director for the Center for Church Management @ Villanova University School of Business

    Matthew is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Management and Operations and the Faculty Director for the Center for Church Management in the Villanova University School of Business (VSB). His responsibilities include the Master of Science in Church Management degree, part of the #5 ranked online graduate business degree program by U.S. News and World Report, the Certificate in Church Management programs, and research and writing on relevant church management issues. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate students and his courses include Organizational Management; Global Business Ethics; Leadership Ethics and Catholic Social Thought; Team Leadership and Group Dynamics; and Pastoral Strategic Planning. He serves as Treasurer of the Religious Research Association and is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Rebuilt Parish apostolate.

    Bishop Daniel Flores Bishop @ Diocese of Brownsville

    Bishop Daniel Flores has served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville since 2009. He studied at the University of Dallas, and Holy Trinity Seminary, completing a BA in Philosophy and a Masters of Divinity. In 1988 he was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Corpus Christi. He completed work on doctoral dissertation in Sacred Theology at the Angelicum in 2000. In 2006, he was appointed and ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Presently, Bishop Flores serves as a committee member on several USCCB Committees as well as chair of the Doctrine Committee.

    Rosie Chinea Shawver Executive Director @ Catholic Association of Latino Leaders

    Rosie Chinea Shawver is the Executive Director of the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders. After finishing her Bachelor degree at UC San Diego, Rosie volunteered at Annunciation House, a home for immigrants, in El Paso Texas. Following her year of volunteer work she was inspired to obtain a Masters in Divinity at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. She has been the Director of Campus Ministry at both the University of New Mexico and the University of Southern California's (USC) Our Savior Parish, USC Caruso Catholic Center. In addition, she was a consultant for the Secretariat of Education at USCCB, and the board chair of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association (CCMA).

    Helen Osman President of the International Board @ SIGNIS

    Helen Osman has 30+ years of experience in mentoring mission-focused organizations to integrate public awareness, catechetical expectations and advocacy priorities. While her clients range from localized to international in scope, a specialty is providing communication strategies for Roman Catholic parishes and dioceses. Osman has worked in communications for faith-based organizations since 1984, and she has coordinated communications for the US Catholic bishops and shepherded the visits to the United States of Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 and Pope Francis in 2015. She is currently president of the international board for SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communications headquartered in Brussels, and the only lay organization for communication professionals with an official status in the Holy See.
