Delmic Cryo-Electron Tomography (Cryo-ET) Journal Club Series - Episode 1

About this event

Join our brand-new podcast-like webinar series since this month, called Delmic cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) journal club. In each episode of this online journal club, our experts will discuss leading articles in the field of cryo-ET and deep dive into technological advances and exciting biological discoveries that employ the cryo-ET technique.

In the first episode of Delmic cryo-ET journal club, we will review the article – Ribosome-associated vesicles: A dynamic subcompartment of the endoplasmic reticulum in secretory cells – which was published in Science Advances this year. The authors make excellent use of the diverse capabilities of the cryo-ET technique. They identify a new membranous compartment and perform sub-tomogram averaging to get structural information on protein complexes. Additionally, they use 3D segmentation to obtain quantitative data on the membrane compartments in the cell. This impressive collection of uses of cryo-ET data shows the power of the technique for cell biology studies.

Our applications specialist, Marit Smeets and Dr. Caspar Jonker, will primarily focus on how the authors used the combination of techniques and how they interpreted the data to come to their conclusions. The discussion will touch upon the impact of the paper on cell biology and on cryo-ET technology development.

You are also welcomed to actively participate in the discussion and share your thought in the chat box during the live session.
