Managing Risk in Construction Administration: Documentation, Communication & Control (1 LU)

About this event

Construction projects are becoming faster, more complex, and more fragmented, increasing the potential for risk during the construction administration phase. While contracts and documentation are intended to provide structure and clarity, many project risks emerge from small gaps between contract intent, project communication, and the documentation maintained during construction.

This course explores where risk most commonly appears in construction administration and how architects can reduce exposure through clearer documentation, stronger project setup practices, and more consistent communication across the project team. Participants will examine common “risk gaps” that occur between contract expectations and real-world project execution, including scope misunderstandings, fragmented communication, and incomplete documentation.

Through practical examples and discussion, the session introduces the concept of maintaining an independent “record of truth” to track decisions, responses, and project events throughout construction. Attendees will gain practical insights into how documentation practices, workflow consistency, and communication habits can help architects better manage risk while maintaining accountability during the construction phase.

The course focuses on real-world construction administration practices and strategies that support clearer coordination, stronger documentation, and more consistent project oversight.

Learning objectives:

  • Objective 1: Identify common risk gaps that emerge during construction administration, including gaps in scope definition, documentation practices, and project communication.
  • Objective 2: Explain how project setup decisions, including scope clarity and contract expectations, influence risk exposure throughout the construction phase.
  • Objective 3: Evaluate documentation practices used during construction administration and determine how maintaining an independent “record of truth” supports accountability and dispute resolution.
  • Objective 4: Apply practical strategies to improve communication, documentation control, and workflow consistency in order to reduce risk during construction administration.
