Mama Glow invites you to their event

Mama Glow Webinar: Celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week

About this event

Join us for the 11th annual celebration of Black Breastfeeding Week 2023!

Black Breastfeeding Week was founded by three Black women, Kimberly Seals Allers, Kiddada Green and Anayah Sangodele Ayoka. 2023 marks the 11th year of Black Breastfeeding Week. This year, the theme is: We Outside! Celebrating Connection & Our Communities. This theme grounds us in joy and reminds us that we are stronger together. This is week where we celebrate our triumphs as a community while also acknowledging the challenges and work that needs to be done.

There are unique barriers that Black women and birthing people face when it comes to birth and breastfeeding. Black women have the lowest breastfeeding initiation rates at 64% and the shortest breastfeeding duration, around six weeks — according to the Centers for Disease Control. Black breastfeeding is not only a reproductive right, but an act of resistance, a radical act to reclaim for ourselves and our babies.

In this webinar will address:

  • Culturally competent lactation support for Black birthing people
  • Structural gaps that impact Black breastfeeding outcomes
  • The Doula’s role in lactation support
  • Black breastfeeding as an expression of healing and political activism
  • Community care, storytelling and feeding legacies

We will be joined in conversation with the following panelists:

  • Sherisa Moore - Registered Nurse, IBCLC and Doula
  • Sterling Grey-Simmon - Certified Breastfeeding Specialist & Full Spectrum Doula
  • Ingrid Silva - Ballerina and activist
  • Latham Thomas - Founder of Mama Glow (moderator)
