Israel is undergoing an electricity revolution and its next big step is a solar-plus-storage auction backed with government power purchase agreements (PPAs) - but time is running out to get involved. With peak demand having grown by over 30% since 2007, the recent unbundling of the Israel Electric Corporation’s national monopoly and the discovery of gigantic gas reserves off its coast to name just a few, the electricity landscape has been changing rapidly.
In this context, solar PV deployment has started to increase, with an active scene of locally headquartered private producers as well as foreign independent power producers (IPPs) establishing a presence.
This series of elements combined with the fact that Israel is technically an electric island - due to the lack of network connections with its neighbours - sets a perfect stage for energy storage.
The Israeli regulator therefore in 2019 established a first national auction for PV-plus-storage. Winners were announced on 15 July 2020, and 672 MWh of storage coupled with PV was selected by the government.
Three IPPs thus earned a 23-year fixed rate, government-backed PPA: a rarity in the renewable energy space!
In early October, the Israeli regulator launched a new PV-plus-storage auction and bidders have until the end of December to take part!
