About this event

The State of Craft is a webinar series focused on the legal craft cannabis industry.

The rollout of cannabis legalization in Canada has been full of ups and downs. The craft cannabis industry in particular has been immensely affected by a myriad of challenges and missteps in the years following the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations.

In The State of Craft, Sami Majadla, CEO of CertiCraft, facilitates conversations with leaders in the legal craft cannabis industry to explore what is going well and what is going not-so-well. We'll discuss what can realistically be changed at different levels of government and industry alike to address major issues the craft cannabis sector is facing, and hopefully inspire stimulating ideas of all sorts. Every episode will end with a 15 min live Q&A with our audience.

In Episode 4, Sami will be joined by John Conroy and Jack Lloyd.

Cannabis legalization in Canada stands on the shoulders of legal giants who defended the rights of individuals to seek their own wellbeing through cannabis. The State of Craft is honoured to host two of the advocates whose work set the foundation for multiple derivations of medical cannabis regulations as well as the current recreational cannabis framework. They are:

John W. Conroy, QC

The venerable John Conroy needs no introduction. Since being called to the Bar in 1972, he has played a pivotal role in many of the most important legal battles in Canadian cannabis history. His experience extends to numerous cannabis cases and constitutional challenges under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including the famous Allard v. Her Majesty the Queen 2016 FC 236. John Conroy was also the founding President of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) in Canada and currently serves on the board of the Pivot Legal Society as well as the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law. Mr. Conroy was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1996 and his notable awards include the BC Civil Liberties Association Liberty Award (2014) and the Ed McIsaac Human Rights in Corrections Award (2016)

Jack Lloyd

Jack Lloyd is a veteran of the cannabis industry. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he was the editor at Green Candy Press, the world’s largest publisher of books about the cannabis plant. He continues to edit select titles such as an update to Greg Green’s seminal work on cannabis genetics: The Cannabis Breeder’s Bible. Jack Lloyd was an associate with Tousaw Law Corporation, one of Canada’s premier cannabis law firms, working on such precedent setting cases as R v Smith 2015 SCC 34. When the firm closed in 2018, he started Lloyd Law Professional Corporation. His practice consists primarily of criminal and constitutional litigation relating to medical cannabis regulation as well as consultancy work relating to the cannabis industry. He is the current President of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) in Canada and continues to advocate for sensible cannabis regulations.
