Teulo Ed | Designing for Circularity: Waterproofing and Local vs Imported Window Solutions

About this event

10.15am - 11.15am | saveBOARD | Paul Charteris - Founder

Synopsis: Circular Construction Materials: Solving Carbon and Waste Challenges

What does Sky Stadium seats, synthetic carpet, Meridian Energy, contact lens and Scope 3 reporting have in common? This Teulo session will explore how architects and designers can integrate circular economy principles into material selection and construction practices to reduce embodied carbon, extend material life cycles, and minimize waste. Paul will highlight innovations in product stewardship, providing practical insights into how circular construction contributes to achieving low-carbon, sustainable buildings plus anything else you would like to know.

Key learning outcomes:

  • Understand the principles of the circular economy and how they apply to material selection, product stewardship, and construction practices within the built environment.
  • Evaluate strategies for reducing embodied carbon through circular design approaches, including extending material life cycles, minimising waste, and incorporating reuse and recycling pathways.
  • Identify practical pathways for implementing circular construction in architectural projects, including the role of Scope 3 reporting, supply chain collaboration, and innovative case studies.

11:15am - 12.15pm | Allco| Chris Ross - Technical Product Specialist

Synopsis: The Role of Concrete Admixtures in Below-Ground Waterproofing

In this CPD webinar we will explore the fundamentals of integral waterproofing systems - what they are, why they matter, and how they are achieved through the use of concrete admixtures, a key component of Type B waterproofing.

Join us as we unpack how admixtures work, when and where to specify them, and the key design considerations when used as part of a combined Type A + B system, to provide a reliable and efficient solution for long-term protection.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how crystalline concrete admixtures function as Type B (integral waterproofing) solutions transforming concrete into a self-sealing barrier against water ingress and chemical attack.
  • Learn how combining Type A (membrane) and Type B (integral) systems provides a robust dual-protection strategy, essential for habitable or high-risk basements by addressing both internal and external water ingress.
  • Identify key specification and design considerations when incorporating concrete admixture.

12:15pm - 1.15pm | Omega Windows and Doors | Alex Holly - National Sales and Marketing Manager

Synopsis: Omega Windows and Doors will be talking about all things compliance when it comes to windows and doors. We will cover the differences between NZ made windows vs imported systems especially design, testing, material quality and performance. Omega Windows and Doors will also talk about recent developments with the building industry around importation, overseas testing standards and why not all products are the same when it comes to equivalent standards and verification.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • How nz made windows are designed to deal with watertightness, water ingress and drainage. How overseas windows differ.
  • The importance of material composition in thermal breaks. Our worrying findings with some imported polyamide strips.
  • Different types of seals, composition, properties and relevance to NZ conditions.
  • How Omega tests windows and doors to prove long term performance. Why and how NZ standards differ.
