Decarbonisation is becoming a central part of construction projects and understanding the environmental impact of the construction industry in India is crucial in accelerating the transition towards a low-carbon, resilient, and sustainable future in India.
In the overall life span of a building, material use and building’s operational use account for majority of the carbon emissions. As part of the policy landscape of the building and construction sector in India, decarbonisation initiatives are mostly aligned towards addressing the operational carbon with very little focus on the life cycle approach covering embodied carbon.
In this two-part series, we are addressing the need to focus on the approach covering embodied carbon and life cycle assessment (LCA) to be able to measure, quantify and make informed choices. These impacts can be addressed from the concept design, as built design and end of life stages.
