Bio:

Joe is a registered architect and Certified Passive House Designer at Respond Architects in Takapuna. Originally from North Yorkshire in the UK, Joe studied and worked in London from early 2007 for a variety of local and international practices before making the move to New Zealand in 2016. He is passionate about high performance and healthy buildings that consist of beautiful and efficient spaces, for people to grow and thrive in. He recently completed his own Passive House Certified home on a building code budget to show healthier, affordable buildings are possible for everyone in New Zealand.

Abstract:

Lower Saddle Passive House - a case study on achieving healthy, low carbon and low impact buildings at standard budgets. After listening to his children getting sick in their minimum-code rental despite sky high bills, Joe and his wife decided they had to do better. They set off on a journey to achieve a Passive House certified home on a budget that would usually be tight for a Building Code home, and in the process produced a home that was low carbon, efficient in energy use, water use, and space; and overall all extremely healthy. Joe will run through the approach they took to achieve this, and the the areas to be mindful of when designing buildings that help both people and planet.
