Financing the Real Economy: A Green New Deal?

10-11.15am, 4th November 2020

Join us for the latest in our series on financing the real economy, A Green New Deal?, on 4th November, as we examine the growing debate around an ambitious programme to tackle climate change as one answer to alleviate the economic fallout from Covid-19 and the implications for insurance portfolios.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, set out a global framework to limit global warming to well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. A transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources lay at the heart of the submitted comprehensive national climate action plans by signatories, with many governments introducing financial incentives to encourage private capital into the infrastructure needed to achieve these goals.

Notwithstanding progress to date, new impetus has now emerged as governments talk of a Green New Deal to tackle simultaneously the twin troubles of climate change and the signficant economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the global economy. Most recently, the EU's Chief Commissioner put significant investment into renewables at the heart of her State of the EU address.

This transitioning has significant implications, not only in terms of the assets to generate energy, but also the infrastructure and evolving technologies needed to support them in terms of storage, transportation and other facets.

Join us as we debate the changing markets and opportunity set for insurers going forward. Can insurers manage the twin challenges of generating an attractive yield, while also addressing the growing focus on sustainability and ESG within the balance sheet?
