Forecasting Injury Risk and Nutrition Through Genetics

About this event

Wednesday, December 15 | 12:30 PM ET

Former Stanford genetics professor Stuart Kim started AxGen after finding strong correlations between genomic markers and specific injuries. This session—in which he is joined by leading sports genetics researcher Malcolm Collins from the University of Cape Town—will explore those links and discuss this emerging field.

Featured Speakers

Stuart Kim is a renowned geneticist and leads AxGen. Stuart Kim, who left his position as Professor of Genetics at Stanford University in order to start AxGen. He draws on more than two decades of research experience to provide AxGen a cutting- edge scientific framework that is rigorous and novel. Since 2016, Professor Kim has analyzed the genotypes from cohorts including hundreds of thousands of people, and been able to find DNA markers for musculoskeletal injuries that are orders of magnitude stronger than those available previously. These DNA markers provide a new scientific edge to help design optimized training regimens to prevent injuries tailored to the individual athlete.

Malcolm Collins, PhD is head of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Division of Physiological Sciences in South Africa. Prof Collins’ doctoral and post-doctoral work, at UCT and the University of Washington in Seattle, respectively, in extracellular matrix biology stimulated his current research focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms causing common exercise- and occupation-associated tendon and ligament injuries. He has developed a very productive internationally recognized research team which has published over 150 papers and book chapters. He is a Fellow of the European College of Sport Science and a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

Registration is free. All registrants will receive a link to watch the recording once the session concludes. If you didn't register for the session, you can watch on-demand here.
