Kevin Daly

Daly Architects

Kevin Daly Architects, a leading architectural firm and design studio based in Los Angeles and New York City, is recognized for an extensive portfolio of public and institutional facilities that advance award-winning contemporary design in everyday life. In this presentation, Daly will discuss two projects from the firm’s award-winning portfolio: the multigenerational living space of the Palms House, and the new Houston Endowment Headquarters, currently under construction.

Palms House is a combination of two kdA projects, spaced nearly a decade apart. The house known as Palms I is a home + ADU renovated by the firm in 2010. After nearly a decade, the family had grown from two to four, one of the clients’ parents was living in the ADU, and the other grandparents were looking to retire on the West Coast. The clients purchased the site next door and commissioned kdA to build a new home that was architecturally cohesive with, but distinguished from, their current residence. The result, Palms II, is a 3,400SF home that parallels the former project and extends its architectural vocabulary, creating a conjoined multi-generational compound that elegantly balances privacy and family.

The Houston Endowment Headquarters is a product of a collaboration between kevin daly Architects and Productora in Mexico City, the unanimous winner of an international competition soliciting designs for a new headquarters for the Endowment, receiving over 120 initial team entries from 22 countries. The program consists of 25,000SF of office space, including multi-use event and meeting spaces, a mix of enclosed and open workspaces, and flexible conference rooms. A hybrid structural system composed of steel framing and CLT provides the building with a flexible and efficient framework with which to freely organize operations. An energy-generating canopy structure provides sun control to the interiors and open terraces while evoking the surrounding tree canopy. The façade is clad in a system of custom formed aluminum panels in a scalloped profile, creating dynamic shadows throughout the day. A secure, enclosed parking garage set partially below grade raises the office floors above the 500-year floodplain.

Virginia San Fratello Podcast

RAEL SAN FRATELLO

Emerging objects expertise in material development will be showcased and discussion around different materials used in the 3D print environment. Virginia will discuss the various additive manufacturing techniques SLS, FDM, 3DP, LOM and more and introduce new methods that are not widely used in the world of 3D printing. Virginia is occupied with trying to design buildings that people would want to live in.

San Fratello draws, builds, 3D prints, teaches, and writes about architecture and interior design as a cultural endeavor deeply influenced by craft traditions and contemporary technologies. She is a founding partner in the Oakland based make-tank Emerging Objects. Wired magazine writes of their innovations, “while others busy themselves trying to prove that it’s possible to 3-D print a house, Rael and San Fratello are occupied with trying to design one people would actually want to live in”. She also speculates about the social agency of design, particularly along the borderlands between the USA and Mexico, in her studio RAEL SAN FRATELLO. You can see her drawings, models, and objects in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
