Innovation Through Sports: Advancing Athlete Health and Wealth

Through the utilizations of different programs, the NFLPA has worked to ensure that player safety is a top priority by implementing health care innovations. During our SportTechie Live conversation we will discuss human performance, machine learning, disease progression modeling, and commercializing novel treatment interventions.

Featured Speakers

Jay L. Alberts, Ph.D., is the Vice Chair of Innovations within the Neurological Institute, holder of the “Edward F. and Barbara A. Bell Family Endowed Chair,” and Staff member within the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He holds an appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. Prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Alberts was a Professor in the Department of Applied Physiology at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Kristy Arbogast, PhD, is the Co-Scientific Director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention, Co-Director of the Minds Matter Concussion Frontier Program at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the R. Anderson Pew Endowed Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. As a bioengineer, her research focuses on the use of head impact sensors to understand the biomechanics of concussion and bioengineering technology for objective measures of concussion diagnosis and monitoring. She co-leads an initiative for the NFL and NFL Players Association to design and implement head impact sensors to define loading conditions in professional football in order to enhance head protection and is funded by NIH, CDC and DOD to study objective measures of neurofunction in concussed youth and strategies for optimizing concussion care.

Sean Sansiveri serves as General Counsel & Head of Business for NFL Players Inc, the NFLPA’s for-profit subsidiary. He also leads the union’s health, safety, and medical research initiatives. Most recently, Sean directed the NFLPA’s efforts to develop and implement the COVID-19 protocols. Over the last 10 years, Sean has designed numerous protective measures intended to minimize the occupational health risks to NFL players. These include the NFL-NFLPA Concussion Protocols and a pain management program that encompasses the first prescription drug registry program in the history of professional sports. He oversees the NFLPA’s portfolio of medical research, including the Football Players Health Study at Harvard, the largest study of living former athletes in history; an innovative collaboration with Cleveland Clinic developing machine learning algorithms designed to predict neurodegenerative disease progression; and partnerships with the Dementia Discovery Fund and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. Other duties include the negotiation of complex commercial transactions with partners such as the NFL, OneTeam Partners, Electronic Arts, Fanatics, and Panini. Sean serves on the board of the American Brain Foundation and MIACH Orthopedics.
