On June 11th, SBTi released V2.0 of its Corporate Net Zero Standard. Earlier than expected, and with changes that go well beyond the technical.
The standard marks a deliberate shift: SBTi is moving from target-setter to implementation partner.
For companies and investors managing existing or planned net zero commitments, the most material changes are:
- A mandatory implementation hierarchy: direct reductions first, market instruments second, book-and-claim excluded
- Rolling 5-year cycles from your most recent year: no more fixed 2020 base
- Best-efforts basis: operational uncertainty acknowledged, but every available lever must be deployed
- Board-approved transition plans: target-setting now comes with an obligation to show the roadmap
