IIE Digital Roundtable

The Bigger Picture: Building a diversified private assets portfolio for life and non-life insurers

10-11.15am, 21st October 2020

Join us for our upcoming digital roundtable, The Bigger Picture, on 21st October 2020, as we debate the challenges of building a meaningful and relevant private assets portfolio for life and non-life insurers.

A complex combination of regulatory constraints, prudent person principles and internal governance mean that insurers often find it challenging to build truly diversified private asset portfolios. The need to carve out beach-heads in new niches and build understanding means that deployment is painfully slow, particularly as opportunities can quickly become crowded or uneconomic given capacity constraints. Alongside, there is greater idiosyncratic risk till the portfolio is of sufficient scale and depth.

Asking the right questions, thinking harder about portfolio construction and balancing risk, governance and capital are key to creating a flexible and optimised private assets portfolio that can add value to the core and reflect the specific needs of insurers, whether they are life or non-life.

Key topics for discussion

  • What are the key portfolio challenges for insurers today when it comes to private assets?
  • What is the right framework?
  • Addressing the differing needs of life and non-life insurers
  • Do shorter duration assets exist?
  • Creating a more holistic portfolio with common elements and parameters
  • The role of internal ratings?
  • Risk and governance constraints
