The Madison Group invites you to their event

Understanding Ductile to Brittle Transitions

About this event

In our analysis of failed components at The Madison Group, the most common type of cracking we see is brittle fracture. However, in most cases, when these polymeric components are tested in a standard tensile test they behave in a ductile manner. The question is what changed in these materials to cause these typically ductile materials to behave in a brittle manner. The failure mechanisms that are often driving these cracks to appear are creep rupture, environmental stress cracking, impact, and many others. These failure mechanisms have one thing in common: there was a ductile-to-brittle transition in the material that caused the brittle cracking to occur.

There are many factors that will cause a typically ductile material to behave in a brittle manner. In this webinar we will identifying what these factors are and explaining how these effects can lead to failure if not properly accounted for. By the end of this presentation, you will have a better understanding of:

  • What factors cause a ductile-to-brittle transition.
  • How these factors vary from material to material.
  • What you can do in your design or material selection to account for this phenomenon.
