ASPI Webinar: UN Cyber Negotiations - What they mean for Australian diplomacy

About this event

ASPI warmly invites you to a webinar on 'UN Cyber Negotiations - What they mean for Australian diplomacy'.

Join ASPI’s Bart Hogeveen in conversation with Johanna Weaver, Special Adviser to Australia's Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, on how states can be restrained from conducting, condoning, and sponsoring cyber operations that destabilise international peace and security, and what states can do to encourage a safe, secure and resilient internet ecosystem at home.

Australia has government representatives in two UN working groups negotiating the details of what has come to be known as the ‘UN framework for responsible state behaviour in cyberspace’.

One of Australia’s key negotiation positions is to focus international efforts on operationalising and implementing agreements that have already been made. Responsibility for, and ownership of, national implementation rests with multiple Commonwealth departments, State and Territory governments, critical infrastructure providers and the Australian internet community.

This webinar discussion will consider the following questions:

  • Which cybersecurity concerns and ICT risks require a concerted international effort through the Commonwealth government?
  • How can we encourage the wider Australian cyber community to make a (next) step in implementing the UN norms of responsible state behaviour?
  • What opportunities are there for the Australian cyber community to engage more with counterparts in the Indo-Pacific?
  • What examples do we have of good practices in providing cross-sectoral reassurances, transparency and cooperation that could be scalable to the national, regional or global level?
